EVERY SUNDAY SQUARE DANCE with Flat Rock Stringband and caller Montana Jane October 27th* 7-9pm (*this particular dance is going to be held at the Velo Cult instead of the Village Ballroom) You know when Wile Coyote runs off a cliff, suddenly notices that he's standing in mid-air, and then plummets downward? I feel like that's what the summer did to us, and suddenly here we are, right in the middle of autumn. This is not a bad thing. The wood stove is going every night, living room tunes happen more often, our beers have gotten a little darker, and the misty, darker weather just seems right. But summer was so good with a bunch of fun gigs, fiddle festivals, and a couple of very fun weddings. One of the best things about fall here in Portland is it's the beginning of Square Dance season. Check the ESSD schedule and go every week to keep those dark-day blahs away! See you there! Join us in celebrating the Northwest's most iconic craft beer style on Saturday, August 10th 11am to 11pm, at Sarveza's 4th Annual IIPA Festival! 30+ rotating IIPA’s (some never poured before!), Double BLT’s, live music, guest brewers and a whole lot of fun! Calling will be Lisa McAvoy of Bellingham, WA. Rumor has it that she's riding her bicycle all the way from Bellingham, and calling the dance as part of a PNW bike tour. Speaking of bicycling, our buddy and fiddler of the Gold Diggers, Travis Cooper, assures us that he too plans on riding out from Portland to attend the dance. That's 110 miles! And then an evening of three hours of square dancing? Wow, that's bad ass. Or sore ass, or something like that. Join us Saturday May 4 for a May Day Square Dance at the Netel Grange. Live music played by the Flat Rock Stringband with caller Lisa McAvoy. The dance begins at 7:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00. Admission is $3 to $5 at the door. All ages, singles, couples and families are welcome. No experience is necessary. Every dance comes with instructions. There will also be Maypole Weaving Dances called by Joseph Stevenson. The Netel Grange is located at 90525 Logan Road south of Astoria. Next week we'll be playing the Every Sunday Square Dance with caller Montana Jane. The dances have been amazing lately, and we heard a rumor that the dance on the 14th will be a legendary 12.5 square square dance (at some point in the night there will be 12.5 squares), so you won't want to miss that. Come on out while you still have a chance this spring! Every Sunday Square Dance 7-9 pm at The Village Ballroom 700 NE Dekum Street The second annual Seabright Stringfest is right around the corner, and we're excited to be a part of it this year. Hosted by Earl White and Adrienne Davis and Fiddler's Jam, the March 2nd Seabright Stringfest is dedicated to the preservation and promotion traditional old-time, bluegrass, and Celtic music, song and dance. And the best part... it's held in Santa Cruz! Sweet, dude! We're going to head south and trade cast iron colored skies for a little California dreaming, and exchange our rain jackets for OP shirts, flip flops, and jams (perhaps the kind you wear as well as the other kind). Flat Rock Stringband will be one of a diverse line-up of traditional music bands and musicians sharing the stage at the Seabright Brewery in beautiful Santa Cruz. We recently spent some time with Alex Yusimov of The Pool Studio, recording some tunes in his living room. We've known Alex for quite some time for his excellent work recording many experimental, psych, indie, ambient noise & punk bands. We thought that we'd fit right in as an old-time band. Alex had once lived in a punk house that was home to a roommate who, as a beginning old-time fiddler, practiced "Sally Ann" for 12 hours straight every day, so we were lucky that he was open to hearing any fiddle tunes at all. We've uploaded clips of the recordings on the "look & listen" page. The recording was done live in the living room using a couple room mics, and really nothing else- no overdubs or tricks. It sounds like us live. When the seasons change, our tune sessions are often defined by the seasonals. It's currently Oatis season, but this photo was taken after one of our tune sessions this spring. Ah, the spring. So long ago. But now, after today, it's so much closer! Here we are, the shortest, darkest day of the year, and tomorrow we'll gain 4 seconds of light, that much closer to the Spring Reign. We're excited to kick-off the evening with fiddle tunes for the Wild & Scenic Film Festival, hosted by the Willamette Riverkeeper. You've probably heard of all great advocacy work that Willamette Riverkeeper does for those of us who love the Willamette River and live within the greater Willamette Valley, and all the awesome events (including Paddle Oregon) that the organization hosts that give us the opportunity to explore, recreate on, and and learn more about this beautiful waterway. So come on out and have a beer with us and check out the Wild and Scenic Film festival for an evening of inspiration and entertainment, all while supporting a worthy cause- a clean and healthy Willamette River!
