This just in! There are now two FRSB members (Brooks Masten and Linnea Spitzer) featured on Cameron DeWhitt's podcast, Get up in the Cool. 

Cameron is a Portland-based clawhammer banjo player and Old Time musician.  He's produced over a hundred weekly episodes where he interviews and plays tunes with old time musicians from coast to coast.  If you like what you hear you can help him out either by throwing a few dollars his way or by writing him a 5 Star review on Apple podcasts which gets his work in front of more people.

This Wednesday January 31st is the last day of January 2018, and we’re celebrating by playing a square dance at the Portland Squares/Every Wednesday Square Dance. As always, the Wednesday dances are an excellent antidote to the dark days of winter and those weighty news blasts that we get hit with so often. Everyone is welcome. No experience necessary at this all-volunteer-run community dance. And, our friends at the Grand Army Tavern host the after party every Wednesday by offering food and drink specials to square dance attendees. You just have to know the secret password (which you’ll learn at the dance).

What’s better than a Saturday afternoon with old-time music? A Saturday afternoon with old-time music and Rivendell Bicycles! Portland’s own independent Rivendell dealer, Rivelo, is having its 1 year anniversary, and we’ll be there to help with the celebration by peppering the afternoon with 1s, 4s, and 5s and the key of A or C and/or maybe G.

Rivelo, a full Rivendell dealer, sells all kinds of things associated with the infamous line, including camping gear and made-in-America clothing (it's also part record store!). This shop is high on the list of our favorite bike shops in Portland, and is a must visit.

The Willamette Valley Old-Time Social (WVOTS) is an annual celebration of old-time music and dance hosted in Eugene, Oregon. The 2016 social will be held May 5-8th, and will feature a variety of hot bands, presenters and dance callers from across the region and beyond. There will be jams, performances, dances, and workshops!

Flat Rock Stringband will be playing a Saturday evening dance slot with John "The Mayor" Luna calling, 7:30 at The Vet’s Club 1626 Willamette Street in Eugene.

We're right in the middle of a 174 day long, 4 stop square dance tour with caller John Luna. Wow, has it been a whirlwind tour. We've seen miles of Willamette Valley road already. Bottles of whiskey and who knows how many beers have been consumed, tunes 'till all hours of the night, someone even ran a tractor into a pump house, taking out the water for the venue one night. 

We kicked off the tour back in November, where we played a raucous set at the Independent Community Center near Philomath, Oregon.  Then, nearly two months later, we sped over to the 17th annual Portland Old Time Music Gathering where we played the first official square dance for the event, at Velo Cult. Now, weeks later, we'll be making the long journey to the Village Ballroom for our 3rd stop, at the Every Sunday Square Dance. We've got a few days still- let's hope we make it in time.

We're taking a road trip to Philomath to do a dance with the amazing and ebullient John Luna. Mr. Luna, known to some as the "Mayor of Stickerville" is a powerhouse of a caller and fiddler. He's been calling dances and playing old time music since...well, most of us in Flat Rock have been alive. If you were lucky enough to dance to his calling at the ESSD last year, you know how what I'm talking about. That guy is on fire. Please join us and find out if we can keep up!
