This Sunday we're playing the ESSD with caller Steph Noll. Have we mentioned how lucky we are in Portland that we have a WEEKLY square dance? As in, EVERY week?
I've been thinking that perhaps one of the only things that square dancing has against it is its name. "Square" and also the association of "square dance" and those junior high or elementary school days. Too much elementary school baggage, man. I suppose I wouldn't blame people for holding that bias. If someone invited me to a long division or multiplication table party I'd likely decline. But, trust me, it's not like that at all. I've never seen folks laughing their asses off doing long division while drinking beer, but that does happen during square dances, despite the name.
Speaking of kick-ass square dances, I recently came across a video of the dances that a group is doing in Nashville. Part of this group of folks is T-Claw, who lived and called dances here in the Pacific Northwest for a good amount of time. Anyway, check this video out by Holler & Stomp. It's inspiring. And fun to watch people having a great time dancing.
See you every Sunday at the dance!
